There are several mechanics in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. These include drifting, gliding, braking, accelerating and tricks
Drifting is a strategy used to take turns faster. There are three kinds of boosts you can get from drifting: Orange, Blue, and Purple. These boosts unleash after exiting a turn, accelerating your vehicle temporarily. All vehicles can drift, and none give any advantage. There are two kinds of drifting, Inside and Outside. Inside drifting is a sharp turn, and outside drifting is a more loose turn. In both cases, you can lean either direction to give the vehicle even more of an outside or inside turn.
Braking is used to slow down the vehicle. In 200cc, braking is imperative to your success. Since some courses weren't made with 200cc in mind, you have to drift slowly in order to avoid crashing. You can hold the brake button to slowly take on a drift.
Accelerating is the most important part of the game as it is how you go forward. Accelrating is assited by items such as the mushroom and star and by elements such as bumping other racers in anti-gravity mode and boost panels on the ground.
Glide control can help you land at the best location. Some maps allow you to land on higher elevation or even a hidden boost panel to gain speed mid-air.
Tricks are performed when you press the item/drift button when going off of a jump. These give you speed boosts while in the air, which set you up for a fast landing.
